Notre Dame senior cornerback Devin Butler has decided to use his final season of eligibility at Syracuse.

Butler missed all of the 2016 season with a fractured foot, but it was the legal trouble that sprung up in August that dominated the headlines. Early in the morning of Aug. 20, he was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and battery against a police officer following an altercation at the Linebacker Lounge in South Bend.

In October, Butler pled guilty to a misdemeanor resisting charge, while the battery charge was dismissed.

Butler never returned to the Notre Dame program, but he did preserve a season of eligibility due to the foot injury he suffered during the summer.

During his Notre Dame career, Butler served as a top backup at cornerback and a key special teams player. He started two games as a sophomore in 2014 when first-teamer Cody Riggs was injured. In 2015, Butler made the start in Notre Dame’s final regular season game against Stanford after KeiVarae Russell was lost for the season with an injury.

He finished his Notre Dame career with 39 tackles, seven passes broken up, one interception and one forced fumble.
