Brian Kelly Post-Practice: Nov. 10

A recap of Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly's Thursday presser...

• Junior linebacker Greer Martini is a player that is suited to play against the triple option. He thrived in last week's game against Navy, and should again play a major role this week against Army.

"First of all they have to understand the option operates, and he had a good sense in high school defending it and understanding it."

• Freshman cornerback Julian Love and junior safety Drue Tranquill (concussion) were cleared yesterday and will play vs. Army.

Junior nose guard Daniel Cage will see a concussion specialist tomorrow. He won't play against Army.

• Kelly said fifth-year senior nose guard Jarron Jones will likely again not have a major role this week against Army, while sophomore Elijah Taylor will probably have an increased role.

Kelly had this to say about Jones' status.

"He’s going to be really good next week," Kelly said. "That’s his kind of deal. I mean, he’s a long, tall guy and he’s going against 6-foot-2, 235-pound scramble blockers. You know, it’s not his domain. He’s going battle for us and he’ll be in there and he’ll two-gap the nose, but it’s a little bit different. They’re not going to zone block him. One guy’s going to be in his knees half the time. So he’s doing his job and he’ll help us, but it’s a whole different game."

Kelly on Taylor: "A guy like Elijah Taylor is going to show in this game. Short. Compact. Physical. Really strong. You’re going to see him play and go, Oh, where’d he come from? He just fits this kind of scheme that we’re playing against. Jarron will get in there and he’ll battle and he’s prepared, but don’t expect 13 tackles for loss. It’s just a different animal that we’re playing."

• Kelly said having former players play on scout team, as Alabama did, is not a fit for Notre Dame. Called rule "absolutely ludicrous," and that it doesn't sound like a rule that fits college football.

• Kelly said there's a "large investment" in freshman defensive end Daelin Hayes. Hayes said he's 239 pounds right now. Kelly said they'd like him closer to 250 in the future.

• Kelly said the Shamrock Series has been beneficial geographically in recruiting. He expects the Irish to have a "good list" of prospects at Saturday's game.
