Youth was the theme at Notre Dame this weekend as the Irish played host to several of the nation’s top underclassmen recruits.

One of those underclassmen who made the trip was Sefita Tupe, a class of 2020 defensive tackle who traveled all the way from Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra.

Tupe said coming to South Bend from the big city in California was a nice change of pace.

“It went good,” Tupe said. “It’s different from life in the city. There’s not really a city out there. There’s not anything out there to distract you from schoolwork.”

And that’s a good thing in Tupe’s mind.

Tupe said he was impressed with the small-town feel of Notre Dame, and of course loved getting to see a game in Notre Dame Stadium.

“It was live,” Tupe said of the game. “There’s tradition out there and everyone followed along with the music and the band.”

The young standout said he was also impressed with the way the Irish played, from start to finish.

“It was good,” Tupe said of Notre Dame’s performance. “The team played together as a family, and that made them win.”

It’s obviously early in his process, and Tupe will surely visit a lot more schools leading up to signing day 2020, but the California talent said he wanted to see Notre Dame early.

“It’s just the fact that it’s different,” Tupe said. “I haven’t been on a lot of trips like that so I just wanted to see the opportunity.”

Outside of the game, Tupe also got to speak briefly with some Notre Dame coaches and got an extensive tour of campus.

Tupe said he got a familiar feeling during his trip around campus.

“It was kind of similar to our school,” Tupe said. “I go to a private school and it’s catholic, so it was kind of similar to how we all work together.”

Tupe didn’t pick up an offer during the trip, and as it stands he only holds an offer from Oregon State.

However, that list is sure to grow over the years, and Tupe said he’s hopeful Notre Dame will eventually pull the trigger.

“That would mean a lot,” Tupe said. “Notre Dame is a great school, so that would really mean a lot.”
