Notre Dame picked up its 17th commitment in the 2017 class when Destrehan (La.) wide receiver Michael Young announced his decision on Twitter.

The 5-11, 175-pound wide receiver chose the Irish over Texas A&M and Oregon. All three programs made a compelling case to Young, but there was something different about Notre Dame.

"They recruit guys who are great on and off the field and who love to compete, and I believe that says a lot about someone's character," Young said. "Academics are huge in my household so the fact that Notre Dame is such a prestigious school not only for athletics but for academics, means a lot to me."

His decision was not just about academics. Young has developed a strong relationship with the Irish staff, including wide receivers coach Mike Denbrock.

“It’s the best of both worlds, athletically and academically,” Young said of Notre Dame. “The coaches are genuine and they don’t promise me anything but the opportunity to play early if I come in and do what I have to do.”

Notre Dame is recruiting Young to play the slot position, but he is a physical receiver with good ball skills, which gives him the flexibility to move outside if the need arises.

Young is the second wide receiver to commit to Notre Dame, joining Winter Park (Fla.) pass catcher Jordan Pouncey, who committed to the Irish on June 18th at the Irish Invasion. Young also attended the event, his first and only visit to Notre Dame.

When Young inks with the Irish in February, he will become just the second player from Louisiana. The other was Jerry Tillery, a two-way lineman at Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian who enrolled at Notre Dame in January of 2015.

Young is the nephew of former Indianapolis Colts running back Joseph Addai, who starred at LSU.
