Notre Dame’s long search to add another defensive lineman to its trio of Darnell Ewell, Kurt Hinish and Jonathon MacCollister finally came to an end today when Kapolei (Hawai'i) High three-star Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa announced his commitment to head coach Brian Kelly and company.

The 6-3, 250-pound Tagovailoa-Amosa was initially intrigued by the Notre Dame upon receiving the offer Jan. 4. He spent two days (Jan. 25-26) in South Bend last week checking out the Irish program. His father, Pastor Tuli Amosa, told Blue & Gold Illustrated the visit went well and it was a “nice experience.”

Tagovailoa-Amosa is the first Hawaiian to sign with Notre Dame since 2010 signee three-star defensive end Kona Schwenke.

Landing Tagovailoa-Amosa is a big win for Notre Dame, which overcame several programs that had been recruiting the defensive lineman longer such as USC. It also provides the class with a versatile player on the field and a high character person off of it.

The Irish staff beat out USC, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and others for the three-star. USC was the leader heading into his three-visit trip last week that included stops at Navy, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt. Education played a major role in his recruitment and Tagovailoa-Amosa ultimately felt the Irish program was a better fit.

Tagovailoa-Amosa became commitment No. 19 for the Irish and the first uncommitted player to sign with the Irish on National Signing Day.

Tagovailoa-Amosa is ranked as the No. 4 player in Hawai'i and the No. 39 defensive tackle in the country. He recorded 18 sacks as a senior, per his head coach Darren Hernandez.
