Notre Dame has long been in search of another defensive end in the 2017 class and they found their man on National Signing Day.
Washington (D.C.) St. John’s College three-star Kofi Wardlow sent his National Letter if Intent to Notre Dame and flipped his commitment from Maryland.
He is the 21st signee for the Irish and fills a big need for the staff it has been looking to fill since the decommitment of Beaver Falls (Pa.) High four-star defensive lineman Donovan Jeter.
Wardlow committed to Maryland in December, but took official visits to Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech in January. He told Rivals Mid-Atlantic analyst Adam Friedman he liked the sense of community surrounding the Notre Dame program and how Mike Elko and the staff would use him in the defense as a hybrid defensive end/linebacker.
As a senior, Wardlow recorded 84 total stops, 28 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks and 17 quarterback hurries in only his second year of high school football. He began playing football for his junior year after being a basketball player primarily growing up.
Wardlow was named to All-USA Washington, D.C., second-team defense by USA Today this season and also selected to second-team All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. He is ranked by Rivals as the No. 47 weakside defensive end in the nation.
