Campbell shakes list up

SAN ANTONIO - William Campbell will make his college choice Saturday at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, and he said Sunday it probably won't be Michigan, where he had previously committed.

The Detroit Cass Tech five-star defensive tackle said he will pick Miami, Florida or LSU and that a Wolverines cap will probably not even be on the table when he announces.

"I most likely won't go to Michigan," Campbell said. "I want to get away from home and explore and everything. I want to see the world and see what else is out there… I'm going to wait everything out and on the day I'm going to make my decision."

Rivals.com rates Campbell, a 6-foot-5, 317-pound prospect, as the fourth-best defensive tackle in the 2009 class behind Missouri commit Sheldon Richardson, Oklahoma commit Jamarkus McFarland and Florida State pledge Jacobbi McDaniel, all five-star recruits.

Richardson and McFarland are also playing in the Army game. Campbell is rated as the No. 25 prospect in the class and the top player in the state of Michigan.

One of the top defensive linemen at last year's U.S. Army Junior Combine, Campbell took his official visit to Michigan in early December and told TheWolverine.com soon after that he was "very comfortable there."

Apparently, things have changed in the last few weeks since the Wolverines probably won't make his final cut. The Cass Tech standout visited Alabama and LSU in November, was at Florida the weekend of Dec. 12 and Miami on Dec. 19.

"It went well down (at Florida)," Campbell said. "I like the facilities and I'm really considering their school. They're like a family and that stood out a lot. The Miami trip went well, too."

High school teammates Thomas Gordon, a three-star athlete, and three-star running back Teric Jones have already committed to Michigan.

Dior Mathis, a 2010 cornerback from Cass Tech, is strongly considering Miami, Michigan, Iowa, Oregon and Tennessee and is also hearing from Florida and Southern Cal.
