San Diego Cathedral Catholic Faces Otay Ranch
Serra @ Scripps Ranch
After a season-opening loss and a closer-than expected Week 2 win over West Hills, Scripps Ranch got on track last week against Morse with a 40-point victory. Serra, too, started the year sloppily before winning three straight, including last week's 40-8 win over Mar Vista. Expect a lot of offense, especially if Scripps' Michigan-bound quarterback, Tate Forcier, gets in a groove -- Winner: Scripps Ranch Time: October 3 @ 6p.m.
Cathedral Catholic @ Otay Ranch
The Dons started the year as well as expected. Otay Ranch has been a pleasant surprise. The Mustangs haven't received much attention, but they've looked decent in wins against Grossmont and Rancho Buena Vista and a tie at Helix. Cathedral might be Oceanside's closest competitor, and a fourth straight easy win would keep its stock soaring. The Dons haven't allowed more than 13 points in any game, and they might keep Otay under that mark, too -- Winner: Cathedral Catholic Time: October 3 @ 7:00 p.m.
La Costa Canyon @ Rancho Buena Vista
The Mavericks likely are licking their chops looking at this game. Yes, they're on the road, but Rancho Buena Vista is a far cry from Mission Viejo and Santa Margarita, La Costa's two previous opponents. The Mavericks lost both of their cross-section games, but should rebound in a big way against a 1-2 Longhorn squad that barely beat San Pasqual last week -- Winner: La Costa Canyon Time: October 3 @ 7:00 p.m.
San Marcos @ Oceanside
The defending Division II state champs come off their bye-week and open Valley League play against an average San Marcos squad. Since their lackluster opener, the Pirates have looked strong. They should win going away against the Knights, but remember, every team is gunning for Oceanside. The Pirates have a big target on their backs, and need to stay focused every week -- Winner: Oceanside Time: October 3 @ 7:00 p.m.
Carlsbad @ Mission Hills
What Mission Hills has done seemingly with ease, Carlsbad has not. Both teams returned few starters from 2007, but the Grizzlies have somehow pieced together a 4-0 start. The Lancers, on the other hand, are 1-3. Last year, this would have been a major showdown. Now, not so much. With home field-advantage and momentum on its side, expect Mission Hills to stay undefeated -- Winner: Mission Hills Time: October 3 @ 7:30 p.m.
