Shumate, Hardy out for Stanford
Eilar Hardy made his second career start last weekend and produced his best performance.
He won't be able to follow up on that Saturday night.
Hardy and Elijah Shumate have been suspended for the Stanford game for being late to a team meeting, Hardy's father Bill told Irish Illustrated on Friday. Without Hardy and Shumate the Irish will have just two tested safeties available against the Cardinal in Matthias Farley and Austin Collinsworth.
A source told Irish Illustrated that Shumate also re-injured his hamstring during the week, which would have limited during the game and potentially sidelined him entirely.
Notre Dame confirmed the suspensions on Friday afternoon for a violation of team rules.
While Hardy and Shumate are less experienced than Farley and Collinsworth, they seemed to represent an athletic upgrade at the position. Hardy posted a career-high eight tackles last weekend against BYU, one off the team lead. Shumate posted his first pass breakup of the season earlier this month at Pittsburgh.
The suspensions may push Max Redfield into extensive action for the first time after the five-star freshman got an endorsement of patience from head coach Brian Kelly earlier in the week. Redfield has 10 tackles in 10 games, but most of his work has come on special teams.
"He's learned a lot and he's grown a lot, and he's at a position now where he's starting to feel pretty comfortable," Kelly said.
