Weekend visit wrapup: Rocky Top this?

Get the scoop on your team:

With plenty of new faces in new places, recently hired head coaches did not waste time welcoming players pledging their commitments to opposing schools onto campus this weekend.

Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn hosted Tennessee commit Cameron Sutton and apparently made an impression with the 6-foot, three-star who said that he was going to re-open his commitment.

Not to be left in the cold, Butch Jones kicked off his tenure on Rocky Top trying to poach another Vanderbilt commit.

Two weeks ago, Jones and his staff were able to flip three-star athlete Malik Foreman from Vandy. This weekend, the Vols went after three-star running back Johnathan Ford of New Hope (Ala.) High. Ford called the trip great and said it gave him plenty to think about.

Long the lions of recruiting, Alabama coaches went after Florida State commit Austin Golson. The longtime Seminole took in Tuscaloosa and said it just had a different feel to that of Tallahassee.

Two other well entrenched staffs took a chance on landing other players as Clemson hosted North Carolina defensive back Korrin Wiggins. Wiggins said that the trip was a "nine" and that he may reconsider his pledge to the Tar Heels and announce on National Signing Day.

Gary Patterson and the TCU staff were the most successful in flipping a commitment as the Horned Frogs targeted Temple (Texas) High quarterback Zach Allen after Doug Marrone left Syracuse. The three-star changed his mind while on campus and closed the weekend with an offer to TCU.

Here is a wrapup of other official visit weekend from around the country.

Stay tuned for updates/additions throughout the day as more reports roll in. Last update: 6:45 a.m. CT

Ben Boulware, a three-star linebacker from Anderson (S.C.) T.L. Hanna, had to cut his official visit time in half after coming down with the flu. While he was on campus, he made his sales pitch to five-star defensive lineman Montravius Adams.

New Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said that he and his staff were going to be doubling down in the state of Ohio and it appears that the early efforts have paid off. West Chester (Ohio) Lakota West offensive tackle Kyle Meadows made the trip to Lexington and liked what the staff had to say.

Four-star defensive end Gerald Willis III made his way to Baton Rouge from New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr this weekend to take an official look at the campus. The Wolfpack hosted six official visitors this weekend and landed two commitments. The new staff is hoping that the official visit taken by University of Florida transfer candidate Jacoby Brissett helped sway the signal caller to State and not West Virginia.
Weekend lands at least two
The most important visitor for the Ohio State program this weekend was Rossville (Ga.) Ridgeland safety Vonn Bell. The four-star prospect said he enjoyed his trip to Columbus but that it was not the right time to commit to Ohio State -- or any program.

The Sooners had one of the bigger official visit weekends to kick off the new year. The updates have been coming in and most have been positive. The biggest news may have been the speculation surrounding the rumored commitment of Fresno (Calif.) East Central safety L.J. Moore.

Concord (Calif.) De La Salle defensive lineman Austin Hooper had long known where he wanted to play his college football, but needed to get the approval of the admissions office before he could commit to the Stanford Cardinal. His official visit weekend produced great news on both fronts.

With the departure of Cordarelle Patterson and Justin Hunter to the NFL, there is a lot of playing time to be offered on Rocky Top and the top target has been Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek pass-catcher Marquez North. The Rivals250 receiver took an official visit to Knoxville but has some official thoughts on his time there.

Temple (Texas) High quarterback Zach Allen had committed to Syracuse in June but with Doug Marrone headed to the NFL, the three-star opened up his recruitment. On his official visit to TCU, the 6-foot-3 player said that he found what he likes closer to home.

The Bruins had a couple of players on campus for the first official visit weekend of the calendar year and most went as expected. Long Beach (Calif.) Poly linebacker Jayon Brown has been a secure commit for a long time and said that his trip was just what he wanted to see.
