Torres makes surprise commitment
Plenty changed for Austin Torres in the last few days.
Last week the forward from Mishawaka, Ind., made a commitment to Central Michigan after taking official visits to some other potential destinations. Then Notre Dame came calling. Torres landed a scholarship offer from the Irish and started to reconsider.
Torres turned his recruitment upside down Monday night when he committed to head coach Mike Brey, becoming the fourth member of Notre Dame’s recruiting class.
“They were interested and showing him interest over the summer,” said Rod Creech, who coached Torres on the summer AAU circuit. “Coach (Brey) saw him play a ton, obviously, because he was at all of our games. Lo and behold here it is. It’s crazy how it happened.”
Brey watched Torres while in pursuit of four-star point guard Demetrius Jackson as they played for the same AAU program.
The 6-foot-7 prospect joins Jackson, who committed to Notre Dame last week, four-star small forward V.J. Beachem and Philadelphia shooting guard Steve Vasturia in the current recruiting haul for the Class of 2013.
Torres, whose parents and grandfather attended Notre Dame, held scholarship offers from Eastern Kentucky, IUPUI, Lamar, Navy and Northern Illinois before committing to Central Michigan on Sept. 24.
“It’s a no-brainer,” Creech said. “No offense to a MAC school but when Notre Dame comes calling and is giving you an opportunity like that it’s a no-brainer.”
