BYU Continues to Add Tall Athletic Receivers

Last week in high school football in the state of Utah Mountain Crest faced Mountain View. Moroni Laulu-Pututau caught a TD reception to help Mountain Crest win 54-14. Laulu-Pututau fits the bill of what BYU has been recruiting the last several years in tall athletic receivers. He stands at 6-foot-5, 190-pounds.

Since his sophomore season in high school he has been hearing from BYU. Coach Nick Howell has been the primary coach recruiting him. As with several other commits, BYU coaches did not have to do a lot of selling to convince Laulu-Pututau to commit to BYU, his junior year BYU offered and week later he committed.

One reason many recruits commit early to BYU is because of family who played or attended the school. This was just the opposite with Laulu-Pututau. Growing up right next door to Utah State, it would seem they would have an edge, even more so that his father played there. They offered and they wanted him. Salt Lake City and the campus of the Utes is closer to his home, his uncle played there and they were interested, but BYU was the school he chose.

So what was it that made him choose BYU so early? "I just knew that is where I wanted to go. I have always liked them. But I knew if I had an opportunity to play at the next level that I would go to BYU just because it is such a great school." Laulu-Pututau also shared what he likes most about BYU. "Just the environment, both the tradition and coaches that are there plus being able to play in front of 65k fans and the religious atmosphere."

BYU coaches have told him that they may switch him to play TE depending on if he gains more weight, which he told he is fine with and has no preference. One of his former high school teammates Alex Kuresa is also experiencing a position change moving from QB to WR, Kuresa has also been introducing Laulu-Pututau so some of the players on the team.
