Brooklyn Coach vies for St. John's post

When it comes to winning in New York, few have done it better and more often than Dwayne "Tiny" Morton.

Currently, Morton is the head coach of the Abraham Lincoln Railsplitters, one of the most successful high school basketball programs in the nation. Morton now hopes to take his talents to the Big East.

With Monday's departure of St. John's assistant coach Mike Dunlap to the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, NYCHoops.net has learned the Coach Morton has entered his name for consideration to fill that void.

Coach Morton says he's already contacted the Red Storm's head coach Steve Lavin. "I called him [on Tuesday] and told him I was interested [in the position]," he said.

Morton brings a wealth of winning and experience to the table in his 15th season as the head coach at the Brooklyn, NY school. During his tenure, the Railsplitters have won seven PSAL titles and three state championships. A former player at the school, Morton has coached former players and current NBA talents like Sebastian Telfair and Lance Stephenson. Most recently he's been coaching top national prospect Isaiah Whitehead

Morton believes he can transfer that ability to win to the Division I college level. Apparently others feel the same way. According to Morton, some high profile college execs have also called on his behalf. "I come well recommended and have connections both in New York and across the nation," said Morton.

On Monday evening, Lavin spoke about replacing Dunlap. "With our back to back stellar recruiting classes now in place we have the luxury of being able to move forward in a deliberate manner to find the best fit for our program."

Coach Morton believes he could be that fit. "I'm New York," he said. "I know how to win."

The Red Storm staff currently includes assistant coaches Tony Chiles and Rico Hines along with Special Assistant/Advisor Gene Keady. In addition, former Rice HS head coach Maurice "Moe" Hicks is the team's director of basketball operations.
