Things are heating up for Robbie Rhodes

Fort Worth Southwest wide receiver Robbie Rhodes was one of the state of Texas' most productive pass catchers last year, and his stock has quietly been on the rise as more and more coaches make their way to his school during the spring evaluation period.

Last week, Rhodes picked up another verbal scholarship offer, this time from the Texas Longhorns. A formal scholarship from the UT staff is expected to be offered on Saturday, when Rhodes meets with the UT coaches.

"It happened on Tuesday or Wednesday, something like that. The UT coaches went out, watched me practice on track, the 4X100. Later when I talked to them, they told me they were going to offer me a full scholarship and told me about how they're try to repair their own team this ear, their whole program. They said they would like me to play at Texas," Rhodes said.

The 6-1, 186-pound Rhodes had recently listed Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech as the three schools that were standing atop his list. With the UT offer, Rhodes has altered his list of favorites.

"It kind of changes up a lot of things, just knowing that a full scholarship is there and things like that," Rhodes said. "I'm liking Texas, TCU and Baylor. Texas A&M a little bit and Texas Tech a little bit."

One of the state's top receivers, Rhodes put up huge numbers as a junior, recording 47 receptions for 1,315 yards and 21 touchdowns on the year. In a win over Fort Worth Arlington Heights, Rhodes burst onto the recruiting scene, catching 10 passes for 394 yards and 8 TDs (both Texas state records). Rhodes continues to sort through his recruiting options, but he said there's plenty to like from his newest offer.

"I know UT always has good wide receivers come out," Rhodes said. "They have a lot of players go to the NFL, and the school is good. Plus it's a good place to be in Austin, a great area."

Rhodes lists his hands, speed and explosiveness as his strengths. He wants to continue to work on his route running, his eye-hand coordination and his ability to make sharp cuts.

On Friday, Rhodes will participate in the Texas Track & Field State Meet, running the 200, 4X100 and 4X200. The next day, he's scheduled to meet with the UT coaches.

"I have a good relationship with (Darrell Wyatt)," Rhodes said. "I'm looking forward to seeing more of Texas."
