Brassell won't announce until Signing Day

BATESVILLE, Miss. - The No. 1 wide receiver prospect in Mississippi has nearly made up his mind about his college decision.

But he is not telling anyone until National Signing Day.

"I am 90 percent sure I know," Nickolas Brassell said Tuesday following an assembly at Batesville (Miss.) South Panola. "I want to make certain and then I will announce it on signing day."

The secretive approach by Brassell has a few SEC fan bases in the crosshairs of a recruiting battle.

Ole Miss, the assumed leader for Brassell, has been a steady riser on the four-star receiver's list since the U.S. Army All-American game.

The receiver was expected to announce he was headed to Mississippi State at the game - but chose to postpone his announcement.

Speculated at the All-American Bowl was that the commitment to Ole Miss of another Mississippi receiver, Madison (Miss.) Madison Central's Tobias Singleton, was having an impact on Brassell.

Brassell and Singleton had become friends through the week, though, and may want to play together in college.

Brassell's coach, Lance Pogue, told RivalsHigh that the decision may not be that easy.

"Alabama is coming on strong for him," Pogue said. "I try to stay out of the recruiting as much as possible so I don't know where he is headed, and I don't try to point him one way or another, but I know Alabama is making a push."

With just a short time until Letters of Intent are signed, the commitment of one of the Rivals100 players could give a major boost to either class.

Alabama currently has 21 commits and still is involved with some of the best players nationally including Cyrus Kouandjio, Jadeveon Clowney, Isaiah Crowell and Brassell.

For Ole Miss, whose campus is just over 20 miles away from Batesville, landing Brassell could be a major coup for Houston Nutt. With the potential of having C.J. Johnson, Donte Moncreif and Singleton as well as Brassell, it would give the Rebels the top four players from the state staying home. But both Moncreif and Singleton are receivers and three could be a crowd.
