Section Sports Stars of Week Six

De La Salle running back Lucas Dunne rushed for a career-high 217 yards and six touchdowns in the Spartans' 62-14 win over Monte Vista. The 5-foot-8 senior's efforts have earned him the Section Sports Athlete of the Week award from Northern California. Dunne only carried the ball 18 times and scored four of his touchdowns in the first half, including a 40-yard score on De La Salle's first play from scrimmage.

Dunne has rushed for 864 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. He has proven himself to be a receiving threat out of the backfield, totaling 274 yards and three touchdowns.

De La Salle improved to 6-0 with the win and is 3-0 in East Bay League play. The Spartans appear on course for yet another North Coast Section title and a return to the state title games in Carson.

Coastal Southern California

After Dana Hills scored in the second quarter of Friday's game to take a 17-14 lead over Mission Viejo, it was the first time this season that the Diablos have trailed. Head coach Bob Johnson's squad normally jumps on teams early on and never looks back. The reigning South Coast League champions surged back, quickly regaining the lead on an 80-yard run by Dallas Kessman, the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for Coastal Southern California.

Kessman finished the night with a season-high 186 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the Diablos overwhelmed the Dolphins for a 52-26 win. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior scored twice in the third quarter to help his team pull away.

Kessman has rushed for 903 yards this season. The Diablos improved to 7-0 with the win and have a bye this week before back-to-back road games against San Clemente and Tesoro.

Inland Southern California

West Ranch High School finally became a part of Foothill League history but not in the way they'd hoped. Valencia running back Steven Manfro rushed for 418 yards in the Vikings' 55-28 win over the Wildcats, breaking the league's single-game rushing record and being named the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for Inland Southern California. The 5-foot-10 senior rushed for five touchdowns including a 78-yarder and a 70-yarder.

The win was vital for Valencia, which was upset by Loyola the week before. It gives the Vikings momentum heading into this week's showdown with undefeated league rival Canyon. The winner will likely take the Foothill League title and a high seed in the Northern Division playoffs.

Small Schools

Capistrano Valley Christian running back Phillip Wilhelm is the Section Sports Small Schools Athlete of the Week after leading the Eagles to a 48-18 win over Express League rival Southlands Christian. Wilhelm rushed for a 63-yard touchdown on CVC's first play and finished the night with 268 yards and four touchdowns.

CVC made national headlines several weeks ago after forfeiting their game against Hope Centre due to injuries (the Eagles were leading the game at the time). Head coach Chris Fore was also forced to call off a non-league game against California Lutheran.

Fore's squad now looks ready to make headlines for a different reason. Their win over previously-undefeated Southlands Christian places them atop the Express League with a chance to win the program's first league title since they took the Academy League in 2002. To accomplish the feat, they must defeat Avalon on Catalina Island this Saturday. The Lancers are 2-3 this season but have not lost an Express League game since joining the league in 2006.
