Canadian star shines at MSU

One of the highlights of any camp is when a player who is flying under the radar shows up and makes a major statement. That is what happened at the Michigan State Camp on Monday when Arjen Colquhoun of W.F. Herman High School in Windsor, Canada took the field. SpartanMag.com caught up with this stock on the rise prospect and got the latest information on his recruitment.

Over the years Michigan State has had some outstanding Canadians star on the football field. If things work out for both Head Coach Mark Dantonio and Colquhoun, they could have another Canadian making plays in Spartan Stadium.

On Monday Colquhoun put on a performance that put him solidly on the chart of players the Spartans are actively recruiting for the class of 2011. It started in the testing phase of the camp when Colquhoun put up numbers that are rarely seen.

"I measured in at 6-foot-2, 176-pounds," he stated. "I ran a forty in 4.42 seconds and did a 10-foot-3 broad jump."

SpartanMag.com has been attending Michigan State's Camp for over a decade and the amount of players who have ran that fast and jumped that far can be counted on one hand. Colquhoun's combination of size, speed and leaping ability puts him in the top 1% of all camp attendees.

Colquhoun's impressive performance continued in the drill portion of the camp and culminated in the 1 on 1's. Colquhoun shutdown several D1 wide receiver prospects who already have multiple scholarship offers.

Colquhoun talked about the feedback he received from the Michigan State Coaching Staff.

"They said my performance was great and that my testing was one of best at the camp. They are interested in how I play and said I have the potential to be a very good player at the next level."

SpartanMag.com asked Colquhoun if he had ever been to Michigan State University and what were his thoughts about the school.

"I was there last year to see the school and watched the game against Central Michigan," he said. "I went on a full tour of everything after camp too. The school is amazing, everything is state of the art. Michigan State has also had a lot of great players there."

Colquhoun came into the camp with a Rice scholarship offer. Central Michigan extended him a scholarship shortly after camp. As far as a Michigan State offer and his future plans, Colquhoun stated the following:

"Coach Dantonio wants me to come back up again so he can get to know me more as a person," Colquhoun said. "I am going to come back up as soon as the season starts. I am also looking to take a visit to the University of Washington and I plan on hitting camps at Alabama and Auburn."

The Michigan State Camp was the third camp that Colquhoun has recently attended and performed well. He also was at Notre Dame and the Sound Mind-Sound Body Camp held last month in Detroit. He talked about getting out and showcasing his abilities.

"I don't feel like I have got a lot of recognition due to being from Canada," he said. "Lots of schools already have recruits they want. I am going to work hard to show that I am just as good as them."

On Monday, Colquhoun did just that. Luckily for Michigan State, they have several slots available for players in the secondary. Colquhoun not only plays a position of need, but one that Coach Dantonio still has scholarships available for. It would not be a surprise if Colquhoun receives a Michigan State offer next time he is on campus.

SpartanMag.com will be sure to follow-up with Colquhoun in the coming weeks. It was just a few years ago that fellow Windsor product Mike Gyetvai starred as an offensive lineman for the Green and White. Mark Dantonio certainly knows that players from across the border can help win in the Big Ten.
