Abilene's Sims commits to Oklahoma State
Herschel Simscommitted to Oklahoma State on Thursday and Eagles coach Steve Warren says there are a number of reasons that his star player decided to go ahead and make his decision.Abilene running back
Sims has received dozens of offers but hasn't received one from University of Texas, which was waiting to offer Sims depending on whether Cibolo Steele running back Malcolm Brown and San Antonio Madison running back Aaron Green to decide on if they'll accept Texas' top two offers to running backs.
Sims, who set school records for rushing yards and touchdowns in a season as the Eagles went 15-0, was named team MVP and makes Abilene a strong contender to repeat in 2010. Making an early commitment should help Abilene stay focused on the 2010 season and it seems like a natural fit for Sims.
"As far as a player I think he possesses a lot of attributes of a lot of great backs," Warren said. "He's fast, he's quick, he's got great vision, he's powerful when he needs to be, and when he doesn't need to be he can be a finesse guy. I think he's got a little bit of all of it from that standpoint.
" I think in the end what it came down to was he told me that they've led the Big 12 in rushing the last five or six years and that's really important to him."
Sims' versatility seems to be the ideal fit for Oklahoma State's newly implement offensive scheme as Warren indicated that they plan to use him through his senior year the same way they always have by both handing him and throwing him the football.
"He was a 2,200- 2,300 yard rusher last year and he caught probably 400 or 500 yards worth of balls," Warren said. "So we're going to get him the football in a lot of different ways."
