Antwaun Woods gets class of 2011 rolling
As the class of 2010 was making their commitments Wednesday, class of 2011 defensive tackle Antwaun Woods wanted to make a commitment of his own.
He was a Trojan.
"I've been thinking about it a lot," Woods said. "SC has always been my favorite school and I know that's where I want to be. There is no school that will change my mind, unless a miracle happens."
The Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft product is one of the top defensive tackles in the junior class. The 6-foot, 280-pound Woods has been compared favorably to several former USC defensive tackles.
"He's a spark plug," Taft head coach Matt Kerstetter said. "Coach Orgeron has gotten real excited about him. He kept saying he's the same size as Mike Patterson, same as Sedrick Ellis and all those big time draft picks. I know Antwaun has those dreams (of playing in the NFL) but its first things first and that was deciding to commit early to USC."
Although Woods' interest in USC dates back years and former coach Pete Carroll was a major draw to the school. Despite Carroll leaving USC to become the Seattle Seahawks head coach, Woods feels that there is not a drop off with the new coaching staff.
"Coach Carroll made me like SC because I felt like part of the family," Woods said. "I just felt like a family around the coaching staff and players and felt a vibe between them. Coach Kiffin is the same way. Coach Orgeron is a good coach and he's made me feel like I'm family already.
"I had the same vibe from both coaches so that's why I said I might as well commit."
Despite the early commitment to USC, Woods still plans on visiting other schools.
"I haven't really seen any other college except UCLA and USC," he said. "I'm taking visits though. I told the coaches that nothing is going on, I'm just taking visits to see the country. Hopefully no one will get scared off that I committed but Florida, Washington, USC, Michigan and Cal are probably schools I'll go see."
After spending Wednesday afternoon watching teammate D.J. Morgan commit to the Trojans, Woods couldn't contain his excitement for his chance to do the same thing next year.
"I'm going to get that opportunity to play at the Coliseum," he said. "It's been my dream since I've been a kid."
