Gordon talks title, Kiffin visit

MURFREESBORO -- Eric Gordon helped his Hillsboro High School team beat powerhouse Henry County, led by eventual-Mr. Football winner Marsalis Teague last Friday.

On Saturday Gordon, a Mr. Football finalist and one of the state's most sought-after recruits, helped the Burros to a 10-7 win over Maryville to win the Tennessee Class 4A Championship.

And right after that, Gordon went home -- where his dream-like week was capped by an in-home visit from new Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin.

"It went great man; he talked to me about a lot of little stuff," said Gordon, who captured offensive MVP honors in the state title game victory against perennial powerhouse Maryville. "He let me know how it would work if I went there."

Gordon indicated Kiffin spent "a couple of hours" with the visit, and he had a couple of different initial impressions of Tennessee's 33-year-old head coach who was introduced at a Monday press conference.

"My first impression is that he's super-tall man," Gordon said. "Next to that, he seems like a guy who knows what he's talking."

The diminutive but dynamic Gordon, who had nearly 100 all-purpose yards, notched four tackles and broke up a pass for the Burros and played at least four different positions, spoke about Kiffin making a point to visit him during his first week on the job.

"It's big, man," said Gordon, who indicated he played the title game with an injured ankle suffered in last week's win against Teague's Henry County squad. "Him just getting there and coming to visit me just let's me know he's very interested."

Indicating he would like to take a trip to Tennessee in the near future, Gordon said Saturday night was a dream-come-true two years in the making.

"Every day since that night; I promised myself and my teammates that we wouldn't have that look on our face that we had two years ago," Gordon said of his sophomore title loss to Maryville. "And it came true, I just thank God."
