Austin in pursuit of Brentwood prospect

With the departure of left tackle Michael Oher after this season and other offensive line players aging in the system, Ole Miss will be after some quality linemen for the 2009 signing class.

One prospect Ole Miss has extended an offer to is Brentwood (Brentwood Academy) offensive lineman Alex Bullard.

Bullard, a 6-foot-3, 275 pound prospect, has ten offers to date, which includes Ole Miss, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Duke, Alabama, Auburn, Illinois and Stanford.

Bullard most recently attended junior days at Tennessee and Alabama.

"They (visits) were both a pretty cool experience," Bullard said. "At both, I just hung around and went to basketball games."

Bullard calls all the schools recruiting him even at this point in the recruiting process.

"As of right now, I'm interested in any school that is interested in me," he said. "In the summer, I will narrow down my list, but I'm approaching things with an open mind now."

New Ole Miss offensive coordinator Kent Austin is recruiting Bullard for the Rebels.

"He's a Brentwood Academy grad," Bullard said. "I've talked to him and he told me how good I am and how they are impressed that I could play either offensive guard or tackle and they like how aggressive I am."

Bullard said he was familiar with Austin's background as an Ole Miss quarterback and former head coach in the Candian Football League.

Bullard appeared equally impressed with Houston Nutt.

"I know Houston Nutt has great prestige in college football," Bullard said. "He'll come down to Ole Miss and do a good job. It's a popular program."

Bullard hasn't finalized arrangements for any additional unofficial visits or a schedule for summer camp.

He said he's never been to the Ole Miss campus but "may come down in the spring."

While Bullard is already a popular recruit, he expects even more interest once his high school starts spring practice on May 5.

He has started at Brentwood since his freshman season and graded out on 93 percent of his blocks last year.

"I'd say my strengths are my quickness and I move my feet well," he said. "I also pass block well and am explosive and take care of my assignments."

Bullard has also taken care of his work in the classroom. He reports a 3.3 GPA in core subjects and took the ACT recently, but hasn't received the results.
