Tucker junior picks up first offer
CLARKSTON, Ga. - Tucker High School out of Georgia has been rolling this season. On Friday night the Tigers completed a perfect 10-0 regular season by blasting past Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove. The juggernaut program pulled out a 38-8 win by utilizing several dangerous weapons including junior running back Drayton Calhoun.
Calhoun is one of several players that get the ball in Tucker's grounded option offense, but every time he touches it, he's a bat of the eye away from taking the ball to pay dirt.
On the night Calhoun finished with 80 yards on nine carries as the leading rusher for the Tigers. After one touchdown on a speed sweep was called back earlier in the game on a penalty, Calhoun still managed to add a late touchdown to his stat sheet by way of a spectacular touchdown spanning 55 yards.
"I had to do a little bit of dancing," Calhoun said. "But I had to get a score, I hadn't gotten a score all night so I had to get in the end zone."
The run involved some broken tackles early, some backpedaling away from defenders on the second level and then a cut back and a foot race into the end zone. With Calhoun's speed there are not too many players that will catch him once he gets in the open field.
"I run a 4.43 in the 40 and a 10.6 in the 100," he said.
At this point Calhoun has a skinny frame but he stands at 6-foot-0 with plenty of room to grow into his body. He runs hard and downhill and shows great speed in the open field. There is no doubt that Calhoun is a serious player to watch for as a senior, but one school has gotten in the game early.
"Tennessee offered me about three weeks ago, October 27," he said. "It's my first offer. I hadn't visited them, I had sent a tape to them. They're in my top five. It was a really big surprise to me. I was really excited about it."
With offer in hand, Calhoun plans to try to get down to Knoxville next Saturday for the game against Vanderbilt to find out more about the program.
