Harris leads team to big win

On Friday the top teams in Southeastern Pennsylvania traveled to Delaware to take on the 3rd ranked team from there. In the end, Spartan WR Jay Harris commitment helped Downingtown East defeated Wilmington St. Marks by a score of 26-21.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Harris had several big plays which changed the momentum of the game for the Cougars. The first of which was diving catch on a 15-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 19-7.

After the St. Marks Spartans close the gap to 19-14, Harris lined up in the backfield and took a handoff and used his speed to get find the endzone for a 4-yard touchdown.

St. Marks would score again to close the score to 26-21. Downingtown got the ball back with 4 minutes left looking to burn the clock out. On a 3rd and 9 Downingtown took a big risk and sent Harris downfield on a straight fly pattern. He would come down with the pass 50-yards downfield and seal the victory.

Unofficially SprtanMag.com had Harris with 5 catches for 119-yards and 1 touchdown.

Spartanmag.com spoke with Harris after the game

"It was a tough game; we knew they were going to be a good team," Harris said. "We played them last year and it was 13-7. They were undefeated so we knew we were going to have to play well to win. I just tried to make plays when I had the chance."

Talk about Michigan State and have you been out there yet this fall?

"No I have not been out yet," he said. "I can't wait to see them play in person. Between our football schedule and my dad's work schedule we have not been able to get out there yet. Hopefully we can get out there and see a game soon."

Whether Harris gets out to East Lansing for a game will have a lot to do with how well Downingtown East plays. Harris hopes his team will make a run all the way to Hershey to play in the state championship. That would extend the Cougars season all the way to December 15th. With Harris and Richmond quarterback commitment Kyle Lauletta leading the way, this could be the year.

As far as an official visit to Michigan State, that will likely come after the season. Harris talked about that and his contact with some of his future teammates and the Spartan staff.

I will take my official visit after the season along with some of the other recruits, Harris said. Damion Terry and I keep in touch, we text each other a lot. I am really looking forward to playing with him. I talk with Kyle Kerrick as well since he is from this area. He is red-shirting this year. I sopeak with Coach Warner and Coach Samuel every week, either they call me or I call them."

The commitmet fo Harris created a lot of buzz on Spartanmag.com as Harris was subsequently rated a 2-star recruit by Rivals.com. Harris was the most talendt player on the field Friday night between two high quality teams. He made multiple big plays when his team needed them. SpartanMah.com will be sure the Harris senior year highlight get evaluated by Rivals.com. From what we saw on Friday night Harris is worthy of 3-star status.
