Orange remain on top for Perkins
Syracuse received two early commitments, but there has been one more player who has had the thought of picking the Orange since January. This prospect is one of the top players in Indiana.
David Perkins, 6-foot-2, 205 pounds from South Bend (Ind.) has been high on the Orange from the time he was offered, he told CuseConfidential.com back in February that he could verbal to the Orange. Is that still the case?
"Right now Syracuse they are still one of my top schools and I still have the same interest. I like them a lot," Perkins said. "Nothing is really stopping me from making a verbal right now. I am just kind of waiting on a few other schools, but that is not really slowing anything down. I just want to see what a couple of other schools have to offer."
Does that mean that the Orange could be getting good news from Perkins soon?
"It could be, maybe," Perkins said.
Despite the chance he picks a school early he will still visit other programs.
"Even if I do verbal early I will still definitely take all of my official visits."
If Perkins does decide to wait and not verbal to Syracuse right away the Orange will be guaranteed to get an official visit. Other than Syracuse there is not another team that can say that.
"They are getting an official no matter what. I do not know any other schools that are on that list for official visits yet."
Tyrone Wheatley is recruiting Perkins for Syracuse and the coach has really made the player feel comfortable during this process.
"I still talk with Coach Wheatley all the time. He is a great coach and great to talk to. When you talk to him he makes you feel like you are talking with a relative. He is a cool guy and he does not make you up tight because he is a coach you can talk to him about anything, be real."
The Orange running backs coach is not the only coach Perkins has talked with he has also talked with Doug Marrone.
"I talked to him probably about a month ago. He was just talking about how they were interested in me and a lot of stuff like that."
With the Orange sitting high on his list there is one thing that jumps out when the athlete thinks about the Orange.
"First thing that pops into my head when I think about Syracuse is Jim Brown," Perkins sated. "Playing at the same school as him would be motivation to break records, lead my team far and bringing them to the top."
He also likes the idea of having the chance to earn a shot to wear the same number as Brown.
"That would be great because of the tradition of it, but obviously the meaning of it and what it means. I think it would be great."
At this point in the process Perkins remains busy looking at schools and working hard in the weight room. He also mentioned two schools that have started to step up their recruitment of him.
"Right now I am just picking up offers, interest, training and school stuff like that. My most recent offer was from Arizona and the school that is starting to pick up interest the most is Purdue."
