Merritt planning to visit Rutgers
Rutgers may be in store for another late January visitor as Sherwood High (Sandy Spring, Md.) athlete Jamal Merritt is planning a future trip to Piscataway. That trip is likely to be the third official visit for Merritt, who currently claims four offers.
"I'm not too sure exactly when they want me to come," said Merritt. "I'm not sure of the exact date but I know it's going to be late this month. I'm definitely going to get up there, I just don't know if it will be the 21st or the 28th."
Throughout Merritt's senior season, he has been in contact with RU defensive line coach Randy Melvin, his primary recruiter.
"I've been talking with Coach Melvin, I haven't really been talking to the other coaches from the staff," said Merritt. "He said they're trying to get me up there to see the school and stuff like that. I've already been up there but they just want to get me up there on an official visit."
Merritt is being recruited as an athlete and talked about where Rutgers is recruiting him to play at the college level.
"I'm not too sure. I'm thinking DB but I'm not positive which one, it might be free safety, it might be corner."
Merritt claims a total of four offers from New Mexico, Ohio, East Carolina and Rutgers.
"Rutgers was actually my first offer," he said.
Merritt has already visited New Mexico and will visit Ohio this coming weekend. He went on to say that a time frame for a decision has not been set as of now.
"I'm not too sure when I'll decide, I'm going to talk to the coaches to see what's going on."
However, Merritt insisted that his official visits will be a telling factor of where he will decide to spend his next four years.
"I just have to have the right feel. I'll know what school it is when I take the visit and see how it is on the campus and stuff like that."
