Westbrook considering official

Tevin Westbrook was first interested in UConn because of its basketball program but then the Coconut Creek (Fla.) North Broward defensive end visited with the Huskies this past summer for football camp and now they are in contention to land his commitment. An official visit is being seriously considered.

Westbrook, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound prospect, said he was mainly impressed with the coaching staff and the facilities at UConn this summer and that he's thinking about an official visit to Storrs in the coming months.

"I enjoyed the coaches and the environment, the school, the campus, the facilities, it was all good to me," Westbrook said. "I really enjoyed it. I pretty much talked to all the coaches especially coach (Randy) Edsall, coach (Hank) Hughes and coach (Terry) Richardson.

"I still have interest in them. I'm possibly taking a visit with them soon and I'm going to sit down with my family and see what I'm going to do. The indoor facility was awesome, I liked it and it was all really impressive."

Rivals.com rates Westbrook, a three-star recruit, as the No. 40 strong-side defensive end nationally and No. 100 in the Florida state rankings. He finished with 103 tackles and 14 sacks in his junior season.

The only official visit Westbrook has set up so far is to Texas A&M on the weekend of Oct. 16 when the Aggies host Missouri.

Duke, Florida International, Marshall, Purdue, UCF, Virginia, Western Michigan and Wisconsin have also offered Westbrook but at this point the only official trip he has scheduled is to Texas A&M and he's thinking about one to UConn.

It's still early for Westbrook, who doesn't expect to make a decision soon.

"I'm pretty much taking my time at this point," he said.
