Giachinta still under the radar

Though plenty of smaller programs are still in hot pursuit of Paramus (N.J.) Catholic athlete Matt Giachinta some of the bigger programs in the region have been slow to catch on.

It appears as though Giachinta, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound versatile athlete, will have some options when it comes to choosing a college later this year or next, but he might not have the opportunity to go to a BCS school.

Army, Pennsylvania, Maine and Towson are the schools that have offered scholarships to Giachinta, and he has also been hearing a good bit from the likes of James Madison, Richmond, Holy Cross and Lafayette.

So far this season Giachinta is a big reason why Paramus Catholic is 2-0. He and his teammates face off against St. Joe's this week in a big showdown that a lot of folks will be watching intently.

Through his first two games Giachinta has rushed for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns. In his last game he racked up 175 yards and three scores on the ground. He also recorded two sacks in his last game.

Some schools may decide to give Giachinta a look at fullback at the next level.

He recently took a trip to West Point to check out the United States Military Academy.

"Yeah, that was an unofficial visit," Giachinta recalled over the weekend. "I went to their home opener against Hawaii. I liked it. I liked the atmosphere there. I talked to some of the coaches and I really liked the people there."

It could be a while before Giachinta gets closer to a decision. He said he will probably not set up his official visits until the end of his season at Paramus Catholic.
