Williamson has Spartans among favorites

One of players that Michigan State has offered for the class of 2011 is Roger Williamson of Dunbar High School in Dayton, Ohio. The 3-star prospect has over 25 scholarship offers to choose from and the Spartans are near the top of his list.

Williamson is listed as wide receiver in the rivals.com database and is ranked the #59 player in the nation at that spot. However, many believe he is an even better defensive back prospect and will ultimately make the biggest impact there in college.

Williamson camped at Michigan State back in July and was a standout performer. He was selected to SpartanMag's Camp Hot List and had a highlight reel interception in the 7v7 portion.

Shortly after the camp Williams stated the following:

"Michigan State would help me not just become a great football player, but to become a successful man in life and to be able to have a life after football. I know everyone will not make it to the NFL so you need a backup plan. The whole Michigan State staff is wonderful and I can see myself there, but I have to wait and see what else is out there so I can make the best choice."

SpartanMag.com asked Williamson about his current recruitment and which teams are standing out?

"Recruiting is still going well," he stated. "I am still high on Michigan State, Cincinnati, Kansas, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Stanford. I plan on taking official visits to most of them."

While recruiting progressing as planned, Williamson indicated that right now he is focused on starting his senior year at Dunbar High. He talked to SpartanMag.com about that.

"We play Valley View High School on Friday night," Williamson said. "We are looking pretty good. Our defense is our strength right now and our offense is coming along. I will be playing both ways as well as returning kicks and punts."

At 6-foot-1, 180-pounds with legit 4.5 speed Williamson's versatility is what makes him a top target for Michigan State. Williamson has the ability to play any position in the secondary. He can be a ball-hawking safety or step up and play man coverage.

The Spartans are getting tight on scholarships for the class of 2011, but are still likely to add 2 more players to the secondary. Williamson is one of a few select targets that Mark Dantonio and his staff are after along with Doran Grant, Valdez Showers and Avery Walls.

Another key aspect of Williamson's recruitment is he is a solid student. He carries a solid 3.1 GPA and he informed SpartanMag.com that he plans to major in business, though he is not sure of a specific focus.

With the recruiting process ready to ramp up again on the 1st of September, Williamson will surely be hearing from all of his top choices. SpartanMag.com will be following up with this dynamic recruit shortly afterwards.
