Grantham offers in state lineman

By his own admission, Spalding County defensive lineman Chris Mayes is a novice when it comes to football.

Basketball was his game until friends of the 6-foot-5, 295-pounder was convinced him to don a helmet and shoulder pads for the first time prior to last season.

Apparently, though, Mayes has been a quick study and colleges are taking notice, including Georgia after Bulldog defensive coordinator Todd Grantham offered the 2011 prospect a scholarship Tuesday afternoon at his school.

"I never imagined it," Mayes said in a telephone interview with UGASports.

The Bulldogs aren't the only school to have offered Mayes thus far.

The quiet youngster also holds offers from Oklahoma State, Louisville, Michigan State and Maryland. Alabama and North Carolina have also visited Mayes at school, with Auburn, Miami and Tennessee also showing interest.

Mayes, who said he made 38 tackles and had "a couple of sacks" last year for Spalding County, is close friends with the Griffin High trio of Corey Moore, Nile Daniel and Xzavier Dickson. The four played AAU basketball together last year, although football now appears to be Mayes' focus.

Moore, a Georgia commit, has been working his buddy hard.

"He tells me I need to come to Georgia," Mayes chuckled.

No stranger to Athens, Mayes said he's been to Georgia three times, including the Bulldogs' recent G-Day game.

He liked what he saw.

"It was loud," said Mayes, who also had kind words to say about Grantham and defensive line coach Rodney Garner.

"I like Coach Garner a lot," said Mayes, who becomes the fifth 2011 defensive lineman with an offer from the Bulldogs thus far joining LaMichael Fanning (an Alabama commit), Lonnie Gosha, Marquise Wright and Gabriel Wright.

"I liked it up there," Mayes said of his recent trip to Athens. "Everything is so organized."

He's nowhere close to finalizing a list of schools.

"I don't have a list at all," he said. "I haven't decided anything yet."
