Vannett knows the landscape

Ohio State tight end recruiting has taken center stage over the past couple of weeks and Westerville (Ohio) star player Nick Vannett has seen his name rise to the top of many lists as the Buckeyes look to fill a second spot in the class of 2011.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder was in attendance for the Ohio State spring game and had a chance to be among a crowd of 50-plus recruits and signees over the next several classes. Vannett has been around the Ohio State before but enjoyed the experience of seeing the action the Horseshoe and being around the crowd.

One of the highlights for Vannett was seeing how Ohio State was utilizing the tight end in the spring game with Terrelle Pryor and Joe Bauserman working it to Jake Stoneburner for three receptions for 43 yards including a 23 yarder.

"(The coaches) said that they see me more like (Jake) Stoneburner out there where they could flex me out and have me do similar things to what he is doing," Vannett said.

Ohio State has two spots set aside for tight ends and with the commitment of Jeff Heuerman to Ohio State the Buckeyes have one spot left. Vannett was looking at that last spot along with Oil City (Pa.) tight end Ben Koyack who recently committed to Notre Dame so the path to that final spot might not be as urgent as once thought but that doesn't change the level of interest that Vannett has toward Ohio State.

"With Jeff and Ben committing I feel that it has taken a little bit of the pressure off of me and that I can take some time to decide," Vannett said. "I would like to commit sometime in the summer if I can. If that doesn't work I would like to be able to commit before the start of my senior season so I can focus on my team and be done with recruiting."

And where do the Buckeyes rank in the hierarchy of things when it comes to schools to be destinations for Vannett?

"I would definitely say that Ohio State would be up in my top two schools when I get there," Vannett said. "I also like Wisconsin with how they use their tight ends as well as Michigan State and Pittsburgh."

Heuerman mentioned after committing to Ohio State that the coaches wanted to run some more two tight end sets which suits him just fine. That question was fresh on the mind of Vannett as well who just recently addressed that with the coaching staff.

"I spoke with coach (Darrell) Hazell yesterday about running two tight end sets," Vannett said. "He told me that they want to run more of that but are still looking to have the right (personnel) to be able to do that. Stoneburner is out there as a pass catching tight end while (Reid Fragel and Nic DiLillo) are more of blocking tight ends."

Did Vannett have much of a chance to hook up with potential future teammate Heuerman to talk about things during the spring game or after?

"I really didn't get much of a chance to talk to him but I look forward to having a chance to get to know him better in the future," Vannett said.

And the Buckeyes are hoping that the future friends will become future teammates and members of the recruiting class of 2011.
