Duzey checks out Spartans
The last few days Michigan State has had a host of talented recruits on campus. One player who stopped in to watch practice and talk with the coaching staff is tight end prospect Jake Duzey of Troy Athens High School. SpartanMag.com spoke with the 6-foot-4, 220-pound prospect and got the latest details on his recruitment.
Duzey, who already holds early offers from Central Michigan and Western Michigan, recently made a swing around the Midwest stopping into the schools he is receiving the most recruiting interest from. He and his family visited Michigan State, Northwestern, Iowa and Purdue.
Duzey was already getting plenty of recruiting interest, but his recent performance at the MichiganPreps.com Combine made him a player that the Big Ten schools are now getting very serious with. At that event, Duzey clocked a 4.49 forty-yard dash, a 4.28 shuttle and had a vertical jump of 33 inches. His overall combine performance put him in the top 1% of the more than 600-particpants.
SpartanMag.com asked Duzey about the feedback he received while on his recruiting trip.
"The schools are all saying the like how I am a versatile athlete that could play multiple positions," Duzey said. "Northwestern said they has a few offers out at my spot, but they said if one of them goes elsewhere I would be next in line. Iowa wants to see me at camp and Purdue seems like they could be close to offering."
Michigan State's Tight End Coach Mark Staten serves as the primary recruiter of Duzey for the Spartans. We asked Duzey what Coach Staten had to say when he was in East Lansing.
"Coach Staten told me that right now they have two or three scholarships out to guys at my position, but he likes me a lot and wants to see me at camp. I will be going to several camps this summer and I will also be at the NIKE Camp at Ohio State."
The Ohio State NIKE Camp could really help Duzey get national attention. At that event he will be competing with many of the other Midwest tight ends prospects that already have BCS offers. A strong showing there could do for Duzey what it did for a former Spartan like Ryan Allison back in 2004. Allison's stock exploded after an impressive performance in Columbus.
Duzey indicated that as of right now he is not in a hurry to make a decision and wants to see how things progress over the next few months. The spring evaluation period will begin in a matter of weeks and he has no problem going to camps to show his skills in person. Duzey did talk about which schools are standing out.
"I really like Purdue, Iowa and Michigan State," he said. "However, I am not counting anyone out. I really like Central Michigan too."
Former Spartan player/coach and now Central Head Coach Dan Enos offered Duzey early in the process.
SpartanMag.com will keep in contact with Duzey over the coming weeks. We will also be covering the Ohio State NIKE Camp and will report on his performance there. Duzey could be on the verge of becoming a solid Big Ten/BCS prospect and SpartanMag.com will have all the details
Matt Dorsey's Take:
Duzey is one of those prospects that we firmly believe will pick up multiple Big Ten offers in the future. It might take a few strong camps performances or even film from his first 3 games, but it will happen.
If Duzey was 6-5, 230-pounds he probably would already have double-digit offers. The good news is that Duzey has the frame to add quality size and he will likely end up built very similar to current Spartan tight end Brian Linthicum after a year at the training table/weight room.
