New Mexico quarterback holds CSU offer

Dustin Walton is giving college football coaches a reason to find Raton, New Mexico on the map. The 6-foot-4, 223-pound signalcaller recently picked up his first college scholarship and has a sizable contingent of coaches coming to see him next month

"I have six coaches coming to see me in the first week of May," Walton said. "I think a lot of coaches just want to see me in action."

Last season Walton led the Raton Tigers to a 10-2 record and a state, Class 3-A semi-final appearance. Walton was the field general of the Tigers' spread offense, completing 64 percent of his passes a year ago for 3,381 yards, 39 touchdowns and nine interceptions. As a sophomore, he completed 50-of-73 passes for 743 yards and eight scores.

"I am good at changing the offense if we need to," Walton said. "I have a lot of control in the offense we run here."

Walton already holds a scholarship offer from Colorado State and is hearing from Arizona State, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, Kansas, Alabama and New Mexico State. He said he is looking for a good physical therapy school with hopes of being a trainer or therapist for a college football team. He also wants a community he can enjoy over the next five years of college.

The Colorado State coaching staff hopes Walton finds Fort Collins to be that community. Walton will be in Fort Collins and Tempe next week during spring break on unofficial visits.

"I want to see how the coaches treat me and what the cities are like," Walton said of his upcoming visits. "If I am going to spend the next five years of my life there, I need to like the cities, the atmosphere of the school. Also, I am looking for good communication and respect for one-another between the coaches and players and the players and players."

Walton said he thought his first scholarship offer came later than he thought it should have, but he was happy to have a free ride from Colorado State.

"Coach Wilkinson is the one that is recruiting me from Colorado State and he made the offer," Walton said. "He just said he liked my film and everyone he has talked to about me says I just what they are looking for."
