Spartans 'definitely at the top' for Ohio DT
Though Michigan State signed defensive tackle Anthony White earlier this month, the Spartans still need to bulk up along the defensive line, and that makes defensive tackle recruiting a very important part of the Spartans' class in the 2011 cycle.
Luckily for the Spartans, this past Sunday served as a junior day on campus, and the staff had an opportunity to host the top defensive tackle currently on their board, Kevin Williams of Springfield High in Holland, Ohio.
"It was a great experience getting a good chance to tour the facilities and get some one-on-one time with some of the position coaches, like at the basketball game with Coach (Don) Treadwell. So it was a really nice time," Williams told SpartanMag.com Tuesday night. "And the atmosphere was crazy there as soon as we got on campus and got out, because my stepdad attended Michigan State, so it definitely brought back memories for him. He couldn't stop telling me and my mom about all the stories he had everywhere It brought back a lot of old memories."
As has been reported by other prospects in attendance Sunday, head coach Mark Dantonio was out of town for the event. Though Williams indicated he had a conversation with Dantonio the week leading up to the junior day, and from what he says about his experience on Sunday, the staff on hand reiterated why Dantonio has targeted him as a must-get DT in this class.
"They definitely say my explosiveness off the ball and quick feet and quick hands. They say those are my greater attributes and that I could make a great contribution to the Michigan State Spartan football team," Williams shared. "And they pretty much told me they like the fact that I'm a good kid, because I don't get in trouble and I'm a good student, and they said that's the type of kid they like in the program."
Unlike some of the other prospects in attendance Sunday, Williams' visit was one of many he's made to East Lansing over the years, and that's due to his stepfather's alumni status.
