Texas LB hearing from familiar UT coach
Steve Edmond first heard from a representative of Tennessee's football staff in the last few days.
The Daingerfield High School (Daingerfield, Texas) linebacker, however, wishes the contact had been made just a bit sooner. The 6-foot-3-inch, 235-pounder expressed a genuine interest in the Vols.
Enough so that he'd like to be attending the scheduled Junior Day at the end of this month that will be hosted by new UT coach Derek Dooley and his staff.
"They let me know too late but I would've come up there," said Edmond. "I would've come up there."
While the Vols only recently settled on the date of their Junior Day for 2011 prospects, they do have an established connection to Edmond in new assistant coach Eric Russell. The former Texas Tech assistant had already communicated with Edmond in his previous job.
So what did Russell tell Edmond about UT and Knoxville?
"That I would like it up there because I'm a country boy because I like fishing and stuff like that and all that stuff is around there," Edmond recalled. "He told me he would come down here one day and we could talk about it more."
While Tennessee hasn't formally offered a scholarship according to Edmond, interest from all over the country is picking up. Arkansas tendered a scholarship offer on Tuesday, which brought the linebacker's early tally closer to 10. He also heard from Texas Tech on Tuesday and indicated Texas has maintained the most consistent contact.
Edmond, however, made it clear distance isn't a factor in his decision. His play on the field reflects as much. The Daingerfield product amassed a whopping 184 tackles last season as his squad won the state championship. Included in those figures were an 18-tackle game, another 15-tackle performance, three quarterback sacks and five interceptions. Edmond returned two of those for touchdowns.
So what does Edmond consider his strengths? And what does he most want to improve before his senior season?
"Using my hands, getting sideline-to-sideline, getting into the holes," Edmonds listed as strengths. "I want to watch film more and stuff like that. When I watch film, that's when my game was on point. When I did that, it showed on the field."
While Edmond waits to learn more about the Vols, he did indicate he would "come up there" to Knoxville to check out the UT program if and when the opportunity arises.
