Griffin making the rounds, headed to Austin
Houston (Texas) St. Pius X defensive back Kolby Griffin has not wasted anytime kicking in 2010.
In January the 5-10, 180-pound defender put his talents on display at both the U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio and the Under-Armour Combine in Florida. At both events he competed against some of the best of the best from around the country.
Then he began to make his way to college campuses with late January visits to TCU and Baylor.
"The TCU Junior Day was first on Saturday, January 30. We went down there and got there early and walked around the campus," Griffin said. "We walked in and met with my area recruiter, coach Eddie Williamson, and we talked for about 10 minutes. Then we went into coach Patterson's office with coach Williamson. Me and my father sat down with coach Patterson and his wife for about 15 minutes and they offered me a scholarship and that went real well. I got to tour the campus and talk to some of the professors and talk academics and got to see the library.
Basically I got to see all TCU had to offer.
"Then the next day we went down to Waco and got to see Baylor. I got to spend a lot of one-on-one time with my position coach, coach Kim McCloud, and coach Brian Norwood and then spent some one-on-one time with coach Briles the head coach. I really liked that. I liked the new indoor facility. I got to tour the campus and got to go to where the Bears habitat is. I had a real good experience and that one my whole family got to go to - me, my dad, my mother, and my little sister."
The two visits offered plenty to think about, but there was one thing about each that really caught his attention.
"Just really the attention those two programs showed me," he said. "They seemed very interested and they genuinely want me to come there."
He has also received Junior Day invitations from Ole Miss, Texas Tech, SMU, and Houston, and Tuesday he picked up an invitation to the Texas Junior Day on February 27.
"I hadn't really heard anything from them and for a couple of weeks and then my coach got a text message from them and they asked to see a highlight film," Griffin said. "So we sent them a highlight film and then like two days later they sent back an invitation to the Junior Day. That was basically it."
Texas has been among his favorites for some time now, and Baylor and TCU have given him plenty to think about. When it comes do who is standing out right now or naming any favorites, Griffin is sorting through his options.
"As of right now things aren't really clear at all," he said. "I like TCU and I like Baylor but I'm also going to look around and take all my visits," he said. "I like TCU and Baylor but I'm also going to look around and look at all my other options like Texas and A&M and the other programs recruiting me."
