The 9th-ranked WSU men's hoop team was back at their defensive best on Saturday afternoon. After allowing 29 second-half points to Montana in last night's win over the Grizzlies, the Cougars responded today by allowing Mississippi Valley State only 26 points for the entire game in collecting their second win, 71-26, at the Cougar Hispanic Fund Challenge at the Spokane Arena. The Cougars were led by 13 points from senior guard Kyle Weaver, who was joined with a career-high 13 points from junior forward Caleb Forrest as Wazzu remained undefeated on the season at 5-0.
Whereas most of the Cougars' first four games have been relatively close affairs in the first half before Wazzu puts on the afterburners in the second half, this game was over from the beginning as WSU rolled to a big 34-17 lead at halftime. The Cougars then put the game away with their customary second-half surge, building up a large lead while holding the Delta Devils to only nine points in the half. The 26-point total was Wazzu's best defensive effort in 59 years, when WSU held Idaho to 23 points.
The Cougars remain undefeated in November games under head coach Tony Bennett - moving to 12-0.
The Cougars will next play Air Force at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 25 at the Spokane Arena in Spokane.
