Golson out at Notre Dame
Everett Golson is no longer enrolled at Notre Dame, according to University spokesman Dennis Brown. The departure throws next season into serious question as the Irish may need a new quarterback.
"Federal law and our own policies preclude us from discussing specifics," Brown told Irish Illustrated.
Local NBC affiliate WNDU first reported the news on Saturday night.
A source told Irish Illustrated that Golson's departure was triggered by a Residence Life violation centered on academics.
Golson helped guide Notre Dame to the BCS National Championship Game last season in his first year of action. He finished 187-of-318 for 2,405 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. Multiple sources have told Irish Illustrated that Golson is on vacation in the Bahamas following the conclusion of the spring semester.
If the Irish are to be without Golson moving forward it would likely thrust Tommy Rees back into the starting lineup. A freshman Rees replaced an injured Dayne Crist, then replaced him again as a sophomore for performance. Rees was beaten out by Golson last August in training camp, but played extensively last season.
Following Gunner Kiel's transfer before spring practice, the Irish could be left with just three scholarship quarterbacks next season in Rees and Andrew Hendrix along with early enrollee Malik Zaire.
