Three weeks off is coming around at an inopportune time for the Notre Dame hockey team.
After a 4-1 win at Bowling Green on Saturday the third-ranked Irish hit the holiday break having won six straight games and eight of their last nine. They sit tied atop the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings with Miami at 30 points.?
T.J. Tynan, Bryan Rust, Mike Voran and Shayne Taker scored in leading Notre Dame (14-4-0, 10-1-0-0 CCHA) from a one-goal deficit.
“I was OK with the way we played tonight,” head coach Jeff Jackson told UND.com. “I thought it would be a little challenging tonight. We only had two practices this week (due to final exams). We had to shake off a little rust early on.”
Bowling Green (3-10-4, 2-7-3-1 CCHA) took a lead at 1:49 of the second period to open the scoring; taking advantage of a power play chance after Jeff Costello went to the box for hooking. Ryan Carpenter deflected a shot past Irish goaltender Steven Summerhays, who finished with 18 saves, for his fifth goal of the season.
Tynan tied it with his fifth goal of the season at 3:44 on a feed from Mario Lucia thanks in part to a fortunate bounce off the boards. Then the scoring onslaught started.
Rust made it a 2-1 game at 11:52 with a power-play goal and lead at the second intermission. Voran scored his fourth of the season at 13:18 of the third period and Taker capped off the scoring less than two minutes later with a power-play goal, his first of the season.
All told the Lucia-Tynan-Voran line combined for six points. Tynan and Voran each registered a goal and an assist while Lucia had two assists. Lucia now has 10 points (five goals, five assists) in nine games since returning from a broken leg.
Notre Dame will return to action with a road trip to Minnesota on Jan. 8.
