November 1, 2011If it is November, and that can mean only one thing, Bruin basketball is just around the corner. The opening game will be against Loyola a week from this coming Friday on November 11. The following are the CliffsNotes Coach Ben Howland's presser earlier today.
As most in the Bruin World are aware, Jerime Anderson, will miss the first two games of the season and because he will, Howland said that De'End Parker and Norman Powell will log more minutes.
Besides being the number one, two guard, Tyler Lamb will probably be the backup point guard until Anderson gets back to the fold.
Powell is a typical freshman and his biggest ting is staying in front of the ball, but he's going to be pretty good.
The entire Bruin basketball will be at the Rose Bowl on Saturday to support the football team. They will be taking the whole day off as they are traveling to the Inland Empire for their scrimmage on Saturday.
Howland hopes to see improvement from their last scrimmage. Again the big thing is staying in front of the ball.
David Wear is doing a good job at the three, which is good because he is 6-10, but he has to remember to stay in front of the ball, too. Most of the guys he is guarding are more around 6-5 and may be quicker. Wear is doing a nice job rebounding, especially on the offensive glass.
Most threes are going to have difficulty guarding Wear down in the post. UCLA is going to start looking for ways to take advantage of Wear's advantage.
It is going to be awhile before Anthony Stover is back and the Bruins will certainly miss his energy on the court, especially on the defensive end. He contests every shot and every rebound.
Sophomore center, Joshua Smith sprained his ankle and has been seen wearing boot, but he is practicing.
Travis Wear will be backing up Smith at the five until Stover returns. Wear is also seeing time at the four.
Thinking of the Wear twins. According to Howland, they are in the best condition on the team, both have excellent stamina.
The Bruins are still looking to go to China and if there are any boosters out there that would like to help make that happen, you are welcome to do so.
