Head coach Brian Kelly announced the awaited and somewhat expected decision on Tuesday.
"He's the kind of guy I want to coach," Kelly said.
Last season's statistics were nearly identical for the two quarterbacks, Crist completing 174-of-294 passes for 2,033 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Notre Dame went 5-4 in Crist's nine starts, although that included him missing a decisive quarter against Michigan and nearly the entire Tulsa game after rupturing his patellar tendon.
Rees took over for the rest of the season, guiding the Irish to wins over Utah, Army, USC and Miami. The former early enrollee finished 100-of-64 for 1,106 yards, 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Crist will speak to reporters later today.
"I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be disappointed," Rees said last week during Media Day about potentially losing the position battle. "Everyone wants to be the guy."
