April 22, 2011In a month or so, Ocean Spring (Miss.) receiver Joseph Morrow will get his college career started when he joins the Bulldogs for summer workouts. But the 2011 Mississippi State signee has recently received a taste of what he will encounter in the near future.
"I've been training on my own for awhile now," said the 6-foot-5 Morrow. "Not long ago, though, I got my workout book from Mississippi State and I've been following that book step-by-step for a bit now. But man, I remember well the first day I got that book. I called one of my friends (Ole Miss 2011 signee) Senquez Golson and asked if he had gotten his Ole Miss training book. He said he did and almost fainted when he first saw it and I told him I did the same.
"But I've been working out with State's workout plan for some time now. And I've really been working hard on it."
And since his final prep campaign ended, his hard work in the weight room has produced results. He added a few pounds to his frame and plans to continue that process this spring.
"I got on the scale just the other day and I was 207 pounds," said Morrow, who had 44 catches for 622 yards and five touchdowns last year, as well as 51 tackles and two interceptions on defense. "I really want to be 215 pounds this summer or really before I get to Mississippi State. It just depends on how hard I push myself."
Morrow has also been working hard in the class room and noted he has his academics in order for the next level.
"I am pretty much qualified and I just have to finish out this semester with where I am at right now," said Morrow. "I am done with the ACT now and thank goodness for that. So I am supposed to report to Mississippi State on May 30th and then start summer school and summer workouts."
Earlier this month, Morrow got to check out his future teammates in person when he attended the Maroon and White spring game. He admitted it was tough at times to watch MSU play due to the fact he wanted to be out on the field.
"Watching the spring game, I really wanted to join my guys and go play," said Morrow. "With the condition I am in now, I really believe I can help them next year. I know college is on a whole other level and I will have to push even harder."
Morrow also remarked on the team's improved depth and talent at the receiver position, and that sight let him know what he will face competition-wise.
"We have a lot of good receivers now," said Morrow. "I know me playing early depends on how good I do in practice, how good I do in the weight room and how I produce. But I plan to do all that and earn a spot in the lineup.
"The main thing going through my head right now is just having the right mindset. I want to come in and catch up with what they are doing on offense. I have to get used to the system first and then try my best to get out there on Saturdays and help the Bulldogs win."
