California Stars of Week 14
Barrinton Collins, who left the Broncos holding nothing but pulsating pile of shattered dreams as the Huskies took a 45-21 win.Corona Centennial entered the Inland Division title game against Vista Murrieta as huge favorites. After the Huskies entered halftime with a 21-14 lead, there seemed to be hope for the Broncos. However, that hope was trampled by Centennial running back
The 5-foot-8, 185-pound senior finished the night with 299 rushing yards, his second-highest total of the season in being named the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for Inland Southern California.
Collins carried the ball 44 times and scored five of Centennial's six touchdowns, bringing his season total to 42 touchdowns. Collins has rushed for 2,325 yards this season, despite missing two of Centennial's games.
The Huskies' win was their third Inland Division title in four years and sends them to the Division I state title game for the third time. Head coach Matt Logan's squad will face Central Coast Section Open Division champion Palo Alto on Friday night. Barrinton Collins will be there.
Coastal Southern CaliforniaGarden Grove's Josh Webb is the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for Coastal Southern California. The 5-foot-11, 172-pound senior scored three touchdowns and the game-winning two-point conversion as the Argonauts defeated Beckman, 31-30 in the Southern Division championship game. Webb rushed for 191 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and caught 10 passes for a total of 144 yards.
Webb scored the first touchdown of the game, a 26-yard score from quarterback Jovani Duran in the first quarter. Beckman responded with a touchdown of their own; the Patriots scored again following Webb's touchdown run to send the game to halftime tied at 13.
The teams traded scores during the second half until Beckman had a 30-23 lead late in the fourth quarter. Duran led the Argonauts down the field, setting up a five-yard touchdown reception by Webb, where he went over a Beckman defender to get across the goal line.
Garden Grove High School had waited 89 years for the school's first-ever football championship; first-year head coach Willy Puga decided that they weren't going to wait through overtime. Naturally, he turned to Webb, who leapt over the Patriots' defense once again, scoring the game-winning two-point conversion and ending nearly nine decades of futility.
Northern CaliforniaWashington Union quarterback Sean Stell is the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for Northern California. The 6-foot senior passed for 363 yards and six touchdowns in the Panthers' 48-21 win over Coalinga in the Central Section Division IV title game. Stell also had a two-yard touchdown run, thereby accounting for all of Washington Union's touchdowns in the game.
Stell ended the season with 3,263 yards, making him the top passer in the Central Section. He completed 61 percent of his passes but improved to over 69.5 percent during the playoffs. Stell threw 33 touchdown passes and was only intercepted five times, but he has not been recruited by Division I programs.
