October 17, 2010Coach Danny Hope said right guard Ken Plue didn't start vs. Minnesota because the junior "didn't do what he's supposed to in regards to academically responsibility."
"We've tried to make an impression on him," Hope said.
Rick Schmeig started in Plue's place. Plue had started the past 23 games for the Boilermakers.
"Rick played very well," Hope said, "then Kenny got dinged up later in the game and we held him out some. He's OK, but Rick played well, probably the best he's played since he's been here."
Some additional notes from Sunday's practice:
Hope said defensive tackle Justin Kitchens was a game-time decision with a sprained knee suffered at Northwestern.
The redshirt freshman did not play against the Gophers.
Now that freshman quarterback Sean Robinson has played - three snaps in the fourth quarter - Purdue will look to continue getting its No. 2 QB in.
Hope said Purdue will try to play him whenever possible, but conceded, "Sometimes we have great intentions, but we don't come through."
"We need to (get him ready)," Hope said, "in case we need to get him in a game."
Not surprisingly, sophomore Max Charlot moves into the lineup now at safety with junior Albert Evans out a matter of weeks, per Hope's post-game assessment, with a knee injury.
Charlot will start alongside Logan Link.
Hope said Sunday that sophomore Chris Quinn and redshirt freshman Ishmael Aristide are now the second team.
