June 8, 2010In a surprising development, the Colorado Rockies drafted NC State redshirt junior quarterback Russell Wilson in the fourth round of this year's MLB Draft.
Wilson is a two-year starter at quarterback for the football team and was a highly touted baseball prospect as well, but he was a platoon starter mostly in left field this past season.
This past spring, Wilson hit .306 while appearing in 47 of the Pack's 62 games, starting 25 contests. Wilson notched three home runs and 12 RBIs on the year while also swiping nine bases in ten attempts.
Last fall on the gridiron, Wilson was the Pack's starting quarterback in all 12 games and threw for 3,027 yards and 31 touchdowns against 11 interceptions for the 5-7 Pack. He was a first-team All-ACC selection as a freshman when he threw for 1,955 yards and 17 touchdowns with just one pick, leading State to the PapaJohns.com Bowl Game.
NC State head football coach Tom O'Brien said during the spring that Wilson was expected to return to the football team this fall.
Wilson is expected to address the media at 5 p.m., Tuesday afternoon via teleconference.
