NJ athlete visits Army & picks up offer
The Black Knights continue to source prospects out the talent rich Garden State and one such player is Matt Giachinta out of Paramus (NJ) Paramus Catholic
When GoBlackKnights.com caught up with Giachinta last week, he had been in contact with the Army coaching staff. "I just heard from Coach Tucker Waugh a couple of minutes ago, said Giachinta of his conversation with Coach on July 10th."
"He came to our school in the spring and I have talked to him a few time after that, but this conversation was basically to set up an unofficial visit for Wednesday
I'm going to go down and check it out. Me and my family, where he will give us a tour and talk academics. I really want to look more into it
I know it has a great football tradition and West Point is great academically.
When Giachinta spoke to Coach Waugh last week, the 6-foot-1, 210 pound athlete was optimistic that Army would be offering him soon. "He said I'm definitely a player they want to recruit," shared the New Jersey prospect who also has an offer from the University of Pennsylvania and high interest in Boston College.
"I like them (Penn.) and I was at Boston College last week at their camp and they said they want to take a look at my senior tape."
VISIT TO ARMY
On Wednesday, Giachinta made his way to the West Point campus where he first met with Coach Tucker Waugh who is handling Giachinta. After his initial time with Waugh, Giachinta and his parents spent time in the "big office" with Head Coach Rich Ellerson.
"I spent an hour with Coach Ellerson and he's a straight shooter," said Giachinta, whose primary role at Paterson Catholic is outside linebacker, but spends time offensively at running back. "He told me that playing for Army is more than about football, but that it's a commitment to what West Point is all about and I appreciate his honesty.
"I loved the campus
right over the river (Hudson) and the football facilities are some of the best I have seen anywhere."
"After I met with Coach Ellerson that is when Coach Waugh made the offer to me," shares Giachinta. "My parents were there and they were very excited
and I was really surprised and very happy that Army offered me.
Attending West Point is a huge commitment and something I will really have to think about. For a 17-18 year old, it's a lot so I will take some time to think about what it all means."
Last season Giachinta had approximately 60 tackles and netted five sacks.
GoBlackKnights.com will continue to follow Giachinta's recruitment.
