It was a squelcher today down in Corvallis as temperatures crept up towards 100 degrees but that didn't faze Mike Riley from leading his Beavers out onto the practice field for a 2 ½ hour practice. The hot weather seemed to rub off on the quarterbacks play as both Ryan Katz and Peter Lalich had hot hands. Katz especially looked good as the day went on as he was taking snaps with the first team offense.
Yes, Katz was taking snaps with the number 1's today but no need to worry; Sean Canfield was just given the day off and will be back practicing tomorrow. Honestly, after today's practice though, Ryan Katz looked more than capable to step in and run the offense efficiently. If he continues his good play throughout the rest of this season, Beaver fans should be very excited about next year as the offense will be able to pick right up without missing a beat.
Katz continued to show off his cannon of an arm but also showed great touch throughout this afternoon's practice session. On one series he completed every pass that he threw including 3 tosses for touchdowns.
On the first play he threw a 25 yard bullet over the middle to James Rodgers right at the goal line. That pass had some serious heat on it as it didn't get higher than 10 feet off the ground the entire way. The very next play from about 20 yards out he dropped a beautiful pass into the corner of the end zone that found Aaron Nichols in stride. The next pass again found pay dirt as he put a ball in what was maybe a 3 foot window to Jacquizz Rodgers' back shoulder. Quizz made a heck of a play to bring it in but Katz put the ball in the only place he could as Dwight Roberson had him covered nearly perfectly. All in all, Katz was on the money for the large portion of practice whether he was in the pocket or rolling out and throwing on the run.
