Where do Vols land on Edwards' list?
Like many recruiting enthusiasts, Mike Edwards read the news online of an Ohio defensive back's commitment to Tennessee and was intrigued.
After all, Edwards was the three-star prospect in question who had been linked to Tennessee. His reaction?
"I don't know where they got that from," said Edwards. "Tennessee is definitely No. 1 on my list, but there are other schools that I want to visit to make sure that the decision I make is the one I want to make.
"Tennessee is definitely high on my list. From me talking to coaches and coaches talking to me, they love me and I feel like I can fit in down there. I'm going to take my visit, see how it goes. But I'm also going to visit Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota. I already took a visit to Cincinnati, and that's somewhere that I am very interested in. But I'm really slowing down this recruiting process, trying to analyze everything."
Tennessee coaches have been doing their part to make sure the 5-foot-10-inch, 170-pounder from Glenville (Ohio) Academic Campus has plenty of information about the Vols. Three different UT coaches have contacted Edwards in recent weeks, and he's been impressed by the consistent line of communication.
"I've actually talked to three different coaches, coach (Lane) Kiffin, coach (Stan) Drayton and I talked to coach (David) Reaves.
"Wow, that's showing me a lot of interest, especially when the head coach has called me two or three times. It's like, "Wow! This is really a blessing.' I really thank God; I've got a lot of stuff coming through, I'm very appreciative of that and I want to make sure I make the right decision."
Edwards, who has scheduled an official visit in Knoxville Jan. 23, has several key factors for which he's searching in his collegiate choice.
"I'm looking for academics," said Edwards, a mature player who boasts a 3.2 GPA. "When I was at Cincinnati I checked into their sports medicine program, and when they broke down the program and what I would have to do and how to do it, I kind of figured, 'Wow, maybe I should not get into a major like that while I'm playing. Now I'm trying to do communications, and I think it would work good at Tennessee or Cincinnati. My main goal is the NFL, but if I do fall short of that, I want to use my scholarship for a career that I can use at the end of the day."
While Edwards, who indicated his decision could last until National Signing Day on Feb. 4 but would prefer to declare his intentions a week earlier, remains anxious to check out the UT campus, facilities and spend more time with the coaches. Further, Edwards wants to meet Eric Berry.
"Man, I've seen him play a lot. He's an excellent player, and I can kind of relate to him because I kind of play like him a little bit too. I'm looking forward to coming down there, meeting players, looking at facilities and talking to coaches more. Ultimately, it is a school I want to go to, but I've still got some other decisions I want to make."
