Miles talks commitment
Peoria (Ariz.) Peoria running back Jamal Miles became Arizona State's 12th verbal commitment of the 2009 recruiting class on Saturday. The four-star running back is the sixth highest rated player in Arizona at any position according to Rivals.com.
"I committed Saturday night to coach Erickson at dinner," Miles said. "I walked up to him with my family and told him that I wanted to be a Sun Devil. He said that I made his day and that he was really excited to have me become part of the program. I am done with all of my visits now. I really happy to be a Sun Devil and now I can concentrate on school"
Miles, who also officially visited Arizona, is no stranger to Arizona State. He has been around the team quite a bit the last few years and attends all the home games that he can. He has previously said that ASU feels like family to him which is not a surprise when he has family on the team.
"My host was my cousin (fellow Peoria alum) T.J. Simpson, Miles said. "I think the trip overall went real well. I came in with my family.
"On Friday night we went out to dinner with the coaches and the other recruits. I was a good time. Saturday we got to tour around the campus. We all got to talk with the academic advisors. After that we went over to the stadium. I got to sit down and watch film with the coaches to see how they do things. Then that night we all went out for dinner again. That's when I told Coach Erickson I wanted to come to ASU. On Sunday we all had breakfast and then got a tour of the locker room."
Miles, as a junior, gained 1679 yards and scored 39 touchdowns for the Peoria. As a senior he rushed for 2168 yards and 29 touchdowns despite being hampered early on by injury. Miles also returned three kicks for touchdowns this season as well as seeing part-time duty at cornerback where he totaled 18 tackles and one interception on the season.
Arizona State is recruiting Miles to play running back. The talented athlete is a superb open field runner and also has the make-up to develop into a playmaking cornerback. Miles was recruited by Dan Cozzetto and chose ASU over offers from Arizona and Utah.
"Coach Cozzetto is recruiting for ASU, they are recruiting as a running back right now," Miles said. "I would like to running back. If I ended up defense I would be cool with it. I just want to get on the field and help out."
Miles said that he is on track to qualify academically and that he is still undecided on a major.
"My plan is to concentrate on school and I am going to run track," Miles said. "The coaches said that I have a real good chance to come in and play next year. They told me that I just have to come in and work hard and earn a spot. I also want to come in this spring as much as I can to get a better feel for the team and how I will fit in. The coaches talked a little to me about when I will arrive in the summer."
