Stew, Kragthorpe: Take the bye week
When it comes to taking a bye week at this time of the season, at least two Big East coaches think it's a good idea.
West Virginia's players (6-3 overall, 3-1) took last Saturday off in preparation for their Saturday game at Louisville (5-5, 1-4). U of L probably took the day to repair from last Friday's game with Cincinnati. The Mountaineers--fighting for a chance at the league crown and/or to improve their bowl stock--have had generally two weeks to prepare for the struggling Cardinals. Louisville had to prep for its 28-20 loss to Cincinnati and now the Gold & Blue, which won this confrontation 38-31 last season in Morgantown.
"I think you can see benefits both ways. You see how teams come off the bye week--it's a time to get healed, get guys back, get guys at full strength. But sometimes you come off a bye week and you are not in a rhythm. At this point, I think it's great to have a bye week. This is the time of year when injuries catch up with you when you're trying to make a run at the stretch," said U of L coach Steve Kragthorpe Monday on the Big East media teleconference.
