UVA lands in-state WR
A few weeks ago things didn't look so good for Al Groh and his Virginia Cavaliers. However, following wins over Maryland, East Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia Tech, things are looking up in Charlottesville. And off the field, the Cavs have added one of the state's top players to boot.
"Tim committed to Virginia this morning," said Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith head coach Richard Morgan of his star wide out Tim Smith. "He's taken three official visits and he just felt he had seen enough. He felt very comfortable on his official visit to Virginia a few weeks back and he was able to compare them to the other schools."
Smith, a 6-foot-0, 182-pounder, also took official visits to West Virginia and Louisville and had offers from Boston College, Maryland, South Carolina and others.
"Virginia has really turned things around and that had an impact on Tim," said Morgan. "They are now in first place in the ACC, they're throwing the ball about 35 times a game and it's an offense that he feels good about. The academics are also great there and he felt the combination of everything was perfect for him."
Smith was ranked as the No. 13 player in the Rivals.com pre-season Virginia Top 30 following a junior season in which he caught 36 passes for 587 yards and five touchdowns. This year Smith has stepped it up to another level with 36 catches for 868 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Smith becomes the 13th in-state commitment to the Cavaliers for the class of 2009 including teammate Perry Jones.
